Prezi

Prezi is a fun format for creating presentations that can be easily saved on their site and accessed from any computer (or saved on my own device), shared with others, or even collaborated on with others. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, presentation skills is a key part of what I teach in Career Pathways. The presentations that my students create are fantastic. It is so rewarding to see students that do not do well in the pencil and paper world of education excel at learning and using a new technology. Last year I even had a student create a Prezi that was used in all of the homerooms in my school simultaneously. What a success.

So, for this lesson I updated a presentation that I use at both back to school night and the beginning of the year to give an overview of what is covered in my class. I chose to use this Prezi since it explains what I teach to anyone who has been reading my blogs and wondering what it is exactly I am teaching! I logged onto my free educator account (Prezi for Education), embedded 3 You Tube Videos into the existing presentation, added them to my path, and saved. This presentation used an existing presentation that I then customized for my needs.

My presentation: Career Pathways Welcome.

This is a website that I use in my classroom.I use it to both present material as well as requiring my students to use it ti create a presentation of their own. I will say the amount of creativity and hard work that students put into this presentation package shows what a fun and effective tool it can be. I have seen presentations that show a side of the student that has not been seen before. We live in such a rich digital era and yet we still have students come to school and sit with paper and pencil listening to lectures. Students need to be doing and Prezi allows them to learn information and then present the information in an alternative format to show mastery of the content. If you have not had students use this site, please try it this year. I am sure you will experience the same positive results that I have.

NETS standard that can be applied to what I have done in this lesson is that I demonstrate "knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society." By using Prezi in my classroom and at back to school night I am using technology to communicate relevant information to the parents and the students. By using Prezi in my instruction, I am modeling proper use of the technology to the students and as always, I teach them the technology I am using.
