Google Forms

In this activity I used the Form feature in Google Drive to create a quiz for my class. It is easier than a real quiz, but it allowed me to play with the features of Google Forms. I created a question using each of the formats available and then chose a theme for the form. This then generated a spreadsheet for me that allows tracking of the data collected on the form.

In this lesson I learned about all of the different types of responses that could be entered into a form. This is a feature that we use at our school for student voting. It is a fast easy way for the entire school to cast a vote for something such as student government and for the teachers to have the vote tally in real time to announce. So, a good example of how the form features can be used.

My form and spreadsheet: Mary Kay's FormMary Kay's Spreadsheet

For my activity, after making the form, I demonstrated it’s functionality to a few of my colleagues and had them the questions.  I had them complete the form using my login to Google. This generates a time stamp rather than a name for each entry on the sheet but is a fast and easy way to collect data without having to add emails for access to the document. If I were to do this for a small class I would use the form feature as I did in my activity. For a larger class or classes, then I would have added the students to have access to the form, so that a name was placed in the first column of the sheet rather than a time stamp. In a real example I would not have used all of the response types on the form. I could easily make a test that would not only show me the results for each student, but also allow me to track which questions were missed most often. This of course would help with improving instructions in the areas where students were not succeeding.

The ISTE NETS T standard that is applicable to me in this lesson is Engaging in Professional Growth and Leadership. Google Drive’s set of applications allows for easy collaboration between teachers, asw ell as between teachers and students. It is an easy way for professionals to share resources and collaborative knowledge in real time. Proficient use of Google Docs is an example of a teacher engaged in professional development in the area of digital technology and the Web 2.
